Part of a recent Harry Rinker Public down sizing auction (well known writer of collectors books, appraiser & columnist).
A Vintage (circa 1939) signed photo mounted on mat board to Lincoln Memorial University, as follows in ink. "
For Lincoln Memorial University, with deep respect and best wishes for the stirring upward struggle of its students
. Dated: May 14 ’39.
Also a Don Hallacy (or some similar last name) light pencil signature as well (not sure what that relates to)
, next to the ink in the corner of the mat board as shown.
De Kruif, was a University of Michigan bacteriologist / microbiologist. The best-selling Microbe Hunters book, earned de Kruif's the reputation of "America's first great science writer." He had a colorful history.
Condition
:
Edge of the photo looks to have been hand cropped resulting in paper peels… then glued to the board. Sentiment is on the mat board, not the photo. Also a tiny paper peel above his suit pocket & small scratch near the right hand shoulder. Mat board is thicker than most and rigid,
only poor/fair condition due to edge wear
, abrasion marks, staining and general age issues (see photo).
