    SAMUEL F B MORSE INSCRIBED CUT 2 1/4" x 5" Matted & Framed INVENTOR-PAINTER COA
    Description
Samuel F. B. Morse (1791-1872) inscribed and signed card 2 1/4" x 5" (showing), matted and framed with illustration 6 1/4" x 7 1/8" (showing), overall size 10 3/4" x 16 1/8". The illustration, most likely based on a painting, shows Samuel Morse seated with an easel to his right and a telegraph machine to his left. The card reads, 'Saml. F. B. Morse. (flourish underneth) with kind wishes New York Sept. 29th, 1871.'
Samuel Morse early in life established himself as a painter, he painted President John Adams, President James Monroe, and the Marquis de Lafayette. While painting the Marquis de Lafayette in Washington, D.C. he received a letter from his father in New Haven, Connecticut stating that his wife was ill, but before he could arrive home his wife had died and had been buried. Though grieving for his late spouse he was inspired to find a faster method of communication. This led to the single wire telegraph, the signal boosting relay, and Morse code.
