  • Condition: Wear and soiling, folds, creases. A few small edge tears. There is a 2" tear along fold at right edge. There is a circular shaped tear at upper right with an old paper repair on the back, and another smaller circular shaped tear to the left of that. Missing a 1/2" x 1/4" piece of broadside sheet at lower center-right - loss of part of one word - 1/2" tear at top. 1 1/4" split at top of fold, 1/2" split at bottom of fold. Missing a 1/4" x 1/4" piece at top of letter page, small hole on letter page at left-center in margin. Good condition. Please see photos!

    Description

    Antique Signed Letter & Advertising Sheet:
    Advertising Sheet and Handwritten Signed Letter from Robertson Buchanan. Scottish Civil Engineer (1770-1816), to Thomas Webster, Architect, of London.
    Letter is hand-dated and posted September 27, 1809.
    Nice historical content; Mr. Buchanan mentions plans for the speedy construction of the observatory in Glasgow, and whether or not Webster's design would be used for the observatory. (
    Mr. Webster was the designer of the observatory in Glasgow, which was built in 1810).
    Mr. Buchanan asks Mr. Webster to do him a favor; "Now permit me to ask a favor of you which is to call on Mr. Savage when you have leisure, and try to push him to print off the rest of an Essay of mine which he long had in the prep." (William Savage, London, Publisher of Buchanan's Essays advertised on front sheet).
