    Description

Autograph postcard signed by Nobel Prize winning physicist Wilhelm Wien, the early 20th century physicist whose scientific advancements laid the groundwork for quantum mechanics decades later. Composed to his mother on 3 August 1901, postcard reads in full, "We just now found your letter. I was very sorry that you went to the trouble. Luise's card was sent on right away. Otherwise, we would have sent a telegram. Today we travelled through the snow-covered Lombard plain, and we had to traverse the mountains before conditions had changed. It was almost too warm here. First, we visited the Campo Santo, a typically Italian cemetery with ornate marble sculptures. Next, we took a boat ride around the harbor; we visited a Russian navy vessel lying at anchor, and [illegible] inspected everything on it. Tomorrow morning at eight, we will put out to sea, and we will be in Gibraltar on Sunday. We hope that the weather will be as nice as it has been today; the lighting effects were magnificent in the early evening. / Best greetings, W." Postcard measures 5.5" x 3.675". Very good plus condition.
