SIR NEVILL MOTT - AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT DOUBLE SIGNED 09/20/1985 - HFSID 153627
    NEVILL MOTT
The Nobel-winning physicist addresses Japanese readers of his autobiography.
    Autograph Manuscript signed
    twice
    :
    "Nevill Mott"
    , 2p, 8¼x11½. No place,
    1989 September 20.
    Autograph note
in upper right corner of p1:
"This is an introduction to the Japanese edition of my autobiography.
    [signature].
    Autograph manuscript, in full:
"Preface - I am honored that this book should be translated into the Japanese language. I wrote it with the encouragement of Margaret Gowring, professor of the History of Science at Oxford University, who told me that solid state science was changing our way of life at least as fast as atomic energy, and that my recollections of how it began could be of value as history. But, writing an autobiography, I could not help including much else, and my description of how it was in the early days with Rutherford and with Bohr may be of interest to a new generation in your country. And I have written also of the war, and of the reaction of physicists in my country to the dropping of an atomic bomb. Also, quite late in life, I became interested in certain aspects of the Christian religion; I have written about that too, and how a physicist can interpret its doctrines, in the form presented by the Anglican church. I have visited Japan only once, in 1953. I was enormously impressed by the enthusiasm of - it seemed to me - a very large number of young Japanese physicists, and also by the kindness of everyone I met and by the beauty of your country. I went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Sendai and Hokkaido. Perhaps that visit - an international conference on theoretical physics, did something to help inspire the young men who now constitute the very impressive schools of physics that Japan now has. I hope so.

Mott (1905-1996) of Cambridge University shared the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physics
for his "fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems". He studied the semi-conducting qualities of glassy substances. Mott was the first Chairman (1963) of the British Pugwash Group, an association of scientists looking for ways to avert nuclear war. Staple holes in upper left of each page. Fine condition.
