    Description

Here we have an incredible collection of correspondence between Katherine Buckley Mallalieu and Howard Atwood Kelly, the famous American Gynecologist known as one of the "Big Four" founding fathers of Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is widely credited with establishing gynecology as a medical specialty. But, Dr. Kelly also studied mycology. Together with Louis Charles Christopher Krieger he published an impressive catalog of his mycological library, illustrations, specimens, replicas, etc. which he later donated to the Herbarium of the University of Michigan.
The five letters (all signed) discuss mycological study, Lectures of Louis Krieger, specimens sent to one another, how to cook certain mushrooms, and even some lighthearted joking. There are sketches of mushrooms by Kelly (along with a handwritten letter on how to cook them) and a photograph taken by him of a dinner of mushrooms gathered off the Hopkins' front lawn!
These letters spanning from 1919-1921, along with a dried specimen, newspaper clippings, and other various writings were found in the back of the book "The Mushroom Book" by Nina Marshall. The bookplate and inscription show the book belonged to Katherine Buckley Mallalieu.
Everything pictured - the book, letters, notes, newspaper clippings, and anything else found in the book - are included with purchase.
