    HOW DOES A FISH BREATHE?
    A fish breathes oxygen just as we do,
    except that it takes it from the water
    instead of from the air. A fish, therefore,
    breathes by taking water into its mouth
    and letting it out through the gills on each
    side of the head. These gills are the fish's
    equivalent of our lungs. They consist
    largely of tiny blood vessels. The fish's
    heart pumps blood to the gills, where it
    passes through these blood vessels. As it
    passes it absorbs oxygen from the water.
    Thus the gills give oxygen to the blood.
    Many fish can take some air through their
    mouths direct from the waters surface;
    we often see them do this when they are
    kept in a bowl, when the waters oxygen
    is nearly used up.
