Description
ENTREE DISH, OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE, WATERHOUSE, ENGLAND 1833. GEORGIAN.Entree dish, Old Sheffield fused Plate, rectangle. length over handles 14 inches, width 8.5 inches, height over finial 9 inches.There are five sections.
The dish is decorated with tied reed borders. The base section with the handles contains the hot water reservoir and is raised on four bun feet. There is an interior dish which is placed over the separate pierced copper liner that covers the hot water well. The lid has a detachable handle so that it can be reversed and then used as a serving dish. The lid is inset on one side with a sterling plaque to allow for the engraving of initials or a crest.

Condition; wear to plate on base of dish and and to plate on bun feet.

Old Sheffield plate articles are made of copper coated with silver by fusion. The technique was discovered about 1742. This type of metalware was principally used in making utensils and vessels for the preparation, serving, and eating of food. Workmanship was of a very high level.
